Just another great day on the water, but with hurricane Charlie off the east coast, the fishing was SLOW . It always marvels the two old retirees, (AKA retarded) Tom Hudson and myself, how the cream rises to the top. The young guns always seem to figure out the fish. Buy 8:00 am they, the smart ones, were off the shallow fish and were working the deeper structure with drop shot rigs and small lures. Us two dummies were still trying to catch fish in less then 10' of water all morning. Oh well. We learned something. Now if we can only remember it. That's hard when you are over 60. We have trouble remembering if we put on our pants in the morning.
The boats get ready for "blast off" at 6:00 am This is second of two of our "Team" tournaments. Again today, we matched up the boater with the most points with the non-boater with the least points. and then right down the line so that the boater with the least points fishes with the non-boater with the most points. Equal points are given to both contestants. This has the advantage of giving everyone a fair chance and also gives all contestants two tournaments with good points. This helps group up the standings for the "Classic" at the end of the year, and gives everyone a chance at Angler of the year"
Tom Hudson and Chris French fishing one of the bays.
Larry LaClair and Randy Green working deep water.
Vern Cole & Garret Kinney off one of the points.
Jeff Edgarton & Jeff Storie with one of their fish.
Jack Loughrey & Jason Adams showing two of their fish.
Ryan Smith & Craig Raponi working hard to catch fish # 5. The bass never really cooperated during the morning. There were only two good fish caught by all members today. Most fish were just over the 12" limit.
Jeff Edgarton takes 3rd place with 7.14 pounds.
Ryan Smith and Craig Raponi take 2nd with 7.89 pounds.
Jack Loughrey & Jason Adams take 1st with 9.18 pounds.
Ryan Smith and "net man" Craig Raponi with Big Bass - 4.53 pounds. and Tom Hudson trying to kiss the fish. And now how Jack and Jason did it. Jack and Jason started out in the morning working top water lures over weed beds in 3 to 8 foot of water. By 8:00 am Jack knew that he had to work deeper water, so he moved out to a drop off where the depth went from 12' to 30' quickly. He also changed to a "Drop shot rig" with little, 3" and 4" worms. Although fishing was still slow, he manage to pick up enough fish to start culling out the small ones that he caught in the morning. Good work Jack and Jason.
The small worms that they used on the drop shots. |
